TEN: The Norman Rea Gallery’s Sparkling Ten Year Anniversary Exhibition and Opening.

Updated: Oct 23, 2019

October 2019 signals ten successful years of the Norman Rea Gallery, the only student run gallery in a UK University.

The exhibition highlights the gallery’s commitment to promoting arts of all genres and subject matter, exhibiting works by local, national, and international artists from throughout the gallery’s ten-year history, and displays exciting works of a range of practices, influences, and mediums.

Monday 14th October signalled the eclectic exhibition’s opening and did so with a bang.

The event distinguished itself by hosting three local musical acts from Laura Kindelan, The Shamble and Violet Contours.

The Shamble

The music of this astoundingly talented set of young performers filled the gallery, overlaying fervent discussions and playful banter, as well as drawing attendees together into the central gallery space, creating hubs of conviviality and gambol among the surrounding fine art.

Throughout the gallery’s ten-year history, it has played a vital role in the academic, cultural and social life of the University of York and surrounding areas, bringing together individuals from all walks of life, united with a shared interest in the arts. This opening night was no different. Among attendees were teachers, students, locals, artists featured in the exhibition, and friends, families, and supporters, all united with a shared sense of celebration.

As the evening drew to a close, guests were invited to converge for the final musical act, performed by Laura Kindelan and her band. As Laura performed, so the room swayed with her, and the Norman Rea Gallery displayed success in its devoir to promote engagement with the arts, and its standing as a bold part of the local artistic community.

The Norman Rea Gallery is committed to promoting the arts within the University and local community. If you are interested in the arts or curating and gallery management, this society provides a unique range of events and opportunities. From socials, to talks from individuals within the arts industry, to the chance to curate exhibitions, the Norman Rea Gallery offers invaluable skills and experiences to those interested in the arts.
