TEN: Artist Spotlight: Daniel Famiyeh

Daniel Famiyeh is a photographer and videographer studying at the University of York. Daniel’s works are concerned with capturing the beauty of places and journeys, often adding lo-fi filters, thus bestowing on them an intimate, ethereal and nostalgic aura.

Daniel shoots and edits all of his footage on his phone, partly, he says, out of necessity, but also to show you don’t need expensive cameras or editing software to create videos people would consider to be art.

Famiyeh credits many of his influences as being those he met and worked with while in secondary school and sixth form, themselves creating work which aligns with and has supported the development of his personal artistic aesthetic.

Daniel’s work was exhibited in the Norman Rea Gallery’s 2018 ‘Communal Spaces’ exhibition, where videos from his series ‘blindspot(s)’ were projected.

The exhibition, which aimed to capture the shared experiences of individuals in communal spaces and the relationship between artists and their surroundings. Daniel’s exhibit consisted of videos taken from different colleges around the University of York, themselves creating communities in which students can find an identity, a home, and meet like minded people.

His videos showcased the beautiful intricacies and nuances of places which form one’s concept of their community. In addition, their lo-fi formatting and aesthetic contributes to the impression of a personal, through-the-eyes journey through the University.

Famiyeh is currently working with the gallery for an exhibition that will explore the idea of immersive digital art.

Work by Daniel will again be exhibited at the Norman Rea in celebration of the gallery’s upcoming tenth-year anniversary exhibition “TEN”. The exhibition aims to celebrate ten years of the Norman Rea Gallery by displaying a selection of artists and their works who have formed the Gallery’s history.

The exhibition will run 14th-28th October 2019 in the Norman Rea Gallery with preview night 14th October 7-10pm.
