Benjamin Arthur Brown is a multifaceted artist who creates works of both a diverse range of mediums and subjects. Brown describes his work as rendering his “anxieties around contemporary pop and political culture, uncovering the infrastructures of control.”
Brown creates works using both found and forged objects, incorporating patterns, colour schemes, themes and images to take a closer look at and question the world, “everyday empirical experiences exposed as the confusing mess of signs and symbols that they really are.”
“In short, I try hopelessly to turn anything into art. In shorter: mix media.”
Benjamin’s work was displayed in his solo exhibition ‘Free Beer’ at the Norman Rea Gallery in January 2015. The exhibition was curated by Catrin Podgorski.
The exhibition displayed a wide array of Brown’s eclectic, multimedia works, from paintings to sculptures and photography.
“It was a tough experience as we had some big ideas, one of which was making hand printed wall-paper. However, Catrin Podgorski and the whole Norman Rea team were so helpful and determined and it felt so good once it was up.”
Brown currently works at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, is a curator and coordinator at the Van Gogh House in London, and works with Rat King Records to produce written, audio and noise works. Brown continues to create an astounding array of diverse, intriguing works, from his fine art to writing and music which can be viewed through his website.
Works by Benjamin will again be exhibited at the Norman Rea in celebration of the gallery’s upcoming tenth-year anniversary exhibition “TEN”. The exhibition aims to celebrate ten years of the Norman Rea Gallery by displaying a selection of artists and their works who have formed the Gallery’s history.
The exhibition will run 14th-28th October 2019 in the Norman Rea Gallery with preview night 14th October 7-10pm.
