OUR TEAM
Senah Tuma &
Faith I Weddle
Co-Directors
Through our involvement in the gallery since first year and both being History of Art students, we formed a close friendship and after both being on the Norman Rea Gallery committee for the past year work, we realised we work very well together. We decided due to the collaborative nature of a student run gallery, to be Co-Directors, combining the roles of both the Director and Vice Director.
Together so far we have curated Up North, an exhibition which highlighted young Northern identity, and led a successful YuStart campaign to provide financial stability for the future of the gallery. We are dedicated to providing stability and a strong foundation for the future committees, exhibitions and members.
We are passionate about giving members a voice, allowing you to make key decisions in the exhibition programme and events we put on. We also want to have fun and bring a level of creativity to everything we do! We believe that our position as the only student run gallery in the UK is really special, and we want to be able to have some fun with it. We want to encourage the gallery as an approachable platform for people to be creative AND professional.
In the last two years we’ve curated and organised exhibitions, worked with a wide range of societies and departments, handled some very pricey and cool artwork, met the Director of Tate Modern and made some amazing friends. We’ve had some incredibly special opportunities through the gallery and are very much looking forward to the year ahead. We encourage anyone to contact us and get involved too!

Finn Reece
Treasurer
Hello. My name is Finn Reece. I am the Norman Rea’s treasurer in my second year here at
York, where I am reading History of Art. Upon starting at York, my priorities were very much
driven toward engaging with as much as I could. The Norman Rea gallery and the
opportunities it offers naturally marries my enthusiasm for both a busy schedule and
experience in curatorship. The gallery’s high standards and substantial online presence also
stood out to me, highlighting the gallery’s uniqueness as an exclusively student run
organisation. Whilst my ambitions are more geared toward the commercial art market, I
consider it a privilege to be involved with a highly professional and creative establishment
and its equally accomplished committee. As treasurer I will aim to ensure the gallery is able
to reach its full potential through effective fund allocations and an efficient approach to the
reimbursement of our members where necessary as well an aggressive acquisition of funds.
This year’s Norman Rea team is extremely promising and I believe we are capable of
reaching new heights of liberal artistic expression and professionalism.
Please feel free to contact me on (fr691@york.ac.uk).
Mariah Chuan
Head of Press
and Publicity
I’m Mariah, a second year History of Art student. Being a member at the Norman Rea Gallery at the start of my first year has given me the opportunity to help behind the scenes with our past exhibitions, from Virtually Real to Up North. The welcoming environment and rewarding experiences has inspired me to get more involved with the gallery. Having a high interest in the media platform and being a proactive social media user, I understand the importance of continuing and further developing the branding of NRG through different plans that are accessible to a range of audiences. As this year’s Head of Press and Publicity, I aim to consistently retain the image of the gallery by ensuring upcoming exhibitions are well publicised as well as create an accessible space for art to be showcased in York and the wider community.
Please feel free to contact me on (wmc505@york.ac.uk) or through my instagram with the link down below.
Emily Quli
Head of Blog
I’m Emily, an English Literature student at the University of York and I am Head of Blog for the Norman Rea Gallery. I overlook the gallery’s blog team by editing, reviewing and posting different articles up to the blog at https://normanreagallery.wixsite.com/blog/blog.
I have been involved with the Norman Rea Gallery over the past year; going frequently to exhibitions and events as well as writing for the current blog team. This has enabled me to become part of the thriving, creative and exciting Norman Rea community. My investment in this community has been one of the most advantageous commitments of my university experience. I look forward to pursuing my engagement with the Norman Rea through providing a progressive, inspiring and creative blog that is accessible for everyone – in and out of the Norman Rea community. My love of literature has introduced me to my love of art. The interactive relationship between literature and art in which many different authors use art to visibly express what they are conveying or the artist expressing what the words do to their imagination, demonstrates a solid relationship between my degree and my thorough interest with the gallery. I am also avidly interested in classical music, another knowledge that has fuelled my love for art. I intend to increase the Norman Rea Blog’s awareness in order to promote the Norman Rea Gallery further. I will do this through writing on a variety of subjects in an accessible way to ensure that people have the arts more available to them.
We would love it if you wanted to write for us! If you are interested in doing so, please contact me at (editor.normanrea@gmail.com) or (erq500@york.ac.uk)
Elsa Cody &
Lucy Whelan
Event Organisers
We are Elsa Cody and Lucy Whelan and we are this year's Events Organisers. As Politics and PPE students we have found the Norman Rea Gallery to be a welcome creative outlet and a great way to meet new people. As we first found the Norman Rea through its events we now want to use our events to bring new people to the space. Being a part of the committee we want to show that the gallery (and art as a whole) can be for everyone regardless of what you study! We hope as Events Organisers we will be able to involve a wide range of students in the gallery community. Elsa has extensive experience in organising events most notably for Sotheby’s in Vienna and is excited to gain further experience in the art world. As a first year, Lucy hopes to run events specifically targeted at involving younger years in the gallery and so make it as inviting and accessible to everyone as possible! Working as a team we are looking forward to taking on this new and exciting role and so being a part of Norman Rea’s legacy.

Francesca Christodoulou

Hi! I'm Frankie, a History of Art student and the gallery’s Members Officer. My job is to be a point of contact between the members of the gallery and its committee. That means you should come to me with any feedback, thoughts or ideas you may have about the gallery and its development! Equally, if you’re considering becoming a member, I’d be happy to answer any questions about that too. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns as I really am always happy to chat! I look forward to meeting you soon!

Keziah Owusu
Gallery Assistant
Hello! My name is Keziah Owusu, the NRG's Gallery Assistant. I am in my second year at the University of York, studying History of Art. My job at the NRG is to uphold the physical appearance of the gallery space. Since the beginning of my university experience, I've taken part in Norman Rea activities, usually writing captions for the exhibited pieces. The gallery’s friendly and non-intimidating atmosphere from the first day I entered has shined through, with its members creating an environment that encourages artistic collaboration, as well as professionalism. I hope I can continue to maintain this environment, so that more people can enjoy and be inspired by it!

Luika Jonynaite
Resident Photographer
Taking photos during the preview nights in Norman Rea gallery to me is a way to capture the diverse community of our members and visitors. With my involvement as a committee member this year I aim not to limit my practice to merely documenting the gallery events but also to reinforce the sense of community with my photographs. My goal is to create a strong visual image of the gallery and, at the same time, to reflect the specificity of the work organisation in Norman Rea. I want that everyone would feel represented and empowered by the visual content I create.
